What is Black Friday? – Meaning and origin

On 26 November, the time has come again: shopping, deals, save.
The popular shopping event has been winning in importance for several years. But where does Black Friday come from?

The history

Black Friday is a bridge day after the American holiday Thanksgiving. It is therefore on the fourth Friday in November every year. For decades, Americans have used this day to start their Christmas shopping.

The name originally has nothing to do with today’s shopping event. It actually comes from finance, where “Black Friday” was one of the biggest stock market crashes in New York (29.10.1929).
It is said that today’s link with the discount action was the calling of the shopping crowds as “black masses” by the police. Since this event in the 1960s, the day has been called “Black Friday”.

The use today

Today, Black Friday is a shopping day for consumers with lots of top deals to save money. For businesses, it means reaching the biggest sales of the year.
